Record your shows and publish them as a podcast

Set your station to record itself — when you go live, on a schedule, or per show — then turn any recording into a podcast episode with a feed Apple, Spotify and every other app can subscribe to.

Every week your station produces hours of audio that vanish the moment they air. Recording keeps it, and publishing turns it into a second way for people to listen — on their commute, at the gym, whenever suits them. This guide covers both: how to make your station record itself, and how to get an episode into Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

Where this lives

Recording lives under Broadcast → Recordings. Publishing lives under Grow → Podcast. Both are included from the Pro plan.

1. Choose when your station records

There are three triggers, and you can use any combination of them. The point of all three is the same: you should never have to remember to press record.

When you go live

On the Recordings page, turn on When I go live. From then on, the moment your mic goes on — from the browser, the phone app, anywhere — recording starts, and it stops when you finish. This is the one most stations want, because it captures exactly the thing worth keeping: you talking.

On a schedule

Click Add window to set a standing slot — say every weekday from 07:00 to 09:00. Your station records whatever is on air during that window, whether you are there or not. Times are in your station's own timezone, the same one your schedule uses, so the 7:00 AM you type is the 7:00 AM your listeners hear.

Scheduled windows are a Business feature

Recording when you go live and recording a specific show are both included from Pro. Standing auto-record windows — recording unattended on a timetable — are on Business and above.

Per show

Open Programming → Schedule, edit a block, and tick Record this show. Every time that show airs it is captured automatically. This is the neatest option if you already run a weekly programme — the recording is named after the show and lands ready to publish.

2. What actually gets recorded

The recording is your broadcast output — exactly what a listener heard. That means your voice mixed over the music bed, talkover ducking, jingles, ads and any fallback that kicked in. It is an aircheck, not a raw microphone feed.

Recording never touches your live stream. It runs alongside the broadcast rather than inside it, so switching it on or off mid-show cannot interrupt what your listeners are hearing.

3. Before you publish: the licensing bit

Your streaming licence does not cover podcasts

This catches out more stations than anything else on this page. A webcasting licence — SoundExchange plus the PROs in the US — covers a live, non-interactive broadcast. It grants no right at all to distribute a recording on demand. Publishing an episode with music in it generally needs separate reproduction and master use rights, obtained directly from the rights holders.

This is not us being cautious — it is the single most common way a station gets a takedown notice. The practical answer most stations land on is simple: publish your talk content. Interviews, features, news, your own commentary. That material is yours, it needs no extra licence, and it is usually the part people actually want to hear again.

Before you can turn recording or a podcast feed on, we will ask you to confirm you hold the necessary rights. That confirmation is recorded and kept. The full terms are in Recording & On-Demand Rights.

4. Publish an episode

  1. 1Go to Grow → Podcast and fill in your show details — title, author, description, category and artwork. These are what listeners see in Apple Podcasts and Spotify, so it is worth a few minutes.
  2. 2Turn on Publish my feed. This is the switch that makes your episodes downloadable — until you flip it, nothing is public and nothing is billed. It asks for a card because hosting is charged on what listeners actually download.
  3. 3Click Publish a recording, pick the recording you want, give the episode a title and a short description, and publish.
  4. 4Repeat whenever you have something worth keeping. Episodes appear in your feed newest first.

Artwork rules, so you only do this once

Apple requires podcast artwork to be square, JPEG or PNG, and between 1400×1400 and 3000×3000 pixels. A rectangular logo is the most common reason a submission bounces. We check yours before you submit and tell you the exact dimensions if it will not pass — but set it correctly the first time and you will never think about it again.

What it costs, and how to stop it

Podcast hosting is pay-as-you-go: you are billed for the audio listeners actually download and the storage your episodes use, with no monthly fee and no download cap. Grow → Podcast shows the running total for the month and the cost per thousand downloads. Turning Publish my feed off takes every episode down and stops the charges the same day — your recordings are untouched, so turning it back on restores the feed exactly as it was.

5. Get into Apple Podcasts and Spotify

Your feed URL is all any directory needs. Submit the same URL to each one:

  • Apple Podcasts — submit at podcastsconnect.apple.com. Review usually takes a few days.
  • Spotify — submit at podcasters.spotify.com. Usually live within hours.
  • Amazon Music / Audible — submit at podcasters.amazon.com.
  • Everything else — Pocket Casts, Overcast, Castro and most other apps pull from Apple's directory, so getting into Apple covers them.

Publish two or three episodes before you submit

An empty feed, or one with a single episode, is more likely to be rejected or ignored. Record a couple of shows first so a reviewer can see what the podcast actually is.

6. How long recordings are kept

Recordings are stored for the retention period included in your plan, then deleted automatically. Published episodes are unaffected — an episode stays available as long as it is published.

PlanRecording hours / monthKept forPublished episodes
StarterNot included
Pro50 hours30 days100
Business500 hours1 yearUnlimited
EnterpriseUnlimitedUnlimitedUnlimited

Download anything you want to keep forever

If a show matters to you beyond your retention window, download it from the Recordings page. Once a recording expires it cannot be recovered.

7. If something looks wrong

  • A recording says “Failed” — the most common cause is that the station was not actually on air for the window. Check the station was broadcasting at the time.
  • A recording is shorter than the show — your station briefly went off air, or the show over-ran the scheduled window. Extend the window and it will capture the whole thing next time.
  • My episode is not showing up in Apple Podcasts — directories cache feeds. A new episode can take a few hours to appear; a brand new show takes days to be reviewed.
  • “You need to accept the Recording Terms” — you or a colleague has not accepted the rights confirmation yet, or the terms have been updated. Open the Recordings page and accept it.
