Radio imaging: jingles, sweepers and station IDs that make you sound real
A practical guide to radio imaging: what sweepers, jingles, liners and station IDs actually are, how often to air each, where to get them, and how to schedule them.
Two stations can play the identical playlist, at the identical bitrate, and one of them sounds like a radio station while the other sounds like someone’s hard drive on shuffle. The difference is almost never the music and almost never the audio quality. It is the three seconds between the songs. That’s radio imaging, and this guide teaches the craft of it — the vocabulary, the anatomy of a sweeper, how often to air each element, what it costs, who owns the rights to the bed under your voice, and how to get the whole package into rotation without dropping files in by hand.
Most articles on this subject exist to sell you a jingle package. This one is here to make you good at it, because a $500 jingle package played at the wrong moments still sounds amateur, and three cuts you produced yourself and scheduled properly do not.
1. The imaging glossary, properly defined
These words get used loosely, including by people who should know better. Producers, voice artists and library vendors all assume you know them. Here is what each one actually means, how long it should be, and what job it does:

“Legal ID” means something different online
The term comes from terrestrial broadcast regulation, where the wording and timing are prescribed by the regulator. As an internet-only broadcaster you are not required to air one. Keep the practice anyway: a fixed top-of-hour ID is the cheapest structure you can give an otherwise formless stream.
2. The anatomy of a sweeper that lands
A sweeper has four parts, and beginners typically produce two of them and wonder why the result sounds thin:
- The voice. One line, present tense, under ten words. “Kestrel Radio. More music, less talk.” Not a paragraph.
- The bed. Instrumental music under the voice, carrying energy the voice alone can’t.
- The effect. A whoosh, riser, filter sweep or impact that gives the element motion. This is literally where the word *sweeper* comes from.
- The transition. How it hands over to the song. This is the part everyone forgets, and it is the part that separates professional from homemade.
The rule: a sweeper should resolve into the song, not stop dead in front of it. Amateur imaging ends on silence, then the next track begins — you can hear the seam. Professional imaging ends on a chord, an impact or a filter release that arrives on the song’s first downbeat, so the two events read as one. Radio producers call that final hit the post. When you produce a sweeper, don’t trim it to the end of the last word: leave the bed running for a beat or two past the voice, and let your playout crossfade it under the song’s opening. Talking up to the vocal
Here is the trick that changes everything, and it costs nothing. Almost every song has an instrumental intro before the singing starts — anything from two seconds to twenty. That window is the ramp. Talking over it and finishing exactly as the vocal enters is the most recognisably professional thing a broadcaster does, and it is entirely learnable.
Three habits make it work. First, know your ramp times: play the intros of your twenty most-used songs, time each one with a stopwatch, and write the number down — many broadcasters put it straight in the track notes in their music library. Second, write to the time you have, not the time you want; a six-second ramp gets a six-second line, and the line gets shorter, not faster. Third, never talk over the vocal. Hitting the post is impressive. Missing it and trampling the singer is worse than not trying, so choose long-intro songs for the slots where you know you’ll talk.
Master your imaging slightly hotter than your music
Imaging that sits at the same level as the songs disappears into them. Real stations process imaging denser and roughly 1–2 dB louder than music so it cuts through on a phone speaker in a car. Do it by ear against your own library, not against a reference from a station whose processing you can’t see.
3. How much imaging is too much
New broadcasters make one of two mistakes: no imaging at all, or imaging on every single transition. The second is worse, because it sounds like the station is an advertisement for itself. Here is a defensible starting frequency — treat it as a ceiling you can dial back, not a target to hit:

The governing rule is simpler than the table: one imaging element per break, and not every break. Aim to image roughly half to two-thirds of your song transitions and let the rest run song-to-song. The gaps are what make the imaging feel like punctuation rather than wallpaper.
The repetition maths nobody runs
If you own two sweepers and air three an hour, a listener who stays 90 minutes hears each one more than twice. Four cuts is the realistic minimum for a station airing imaging at a normal rate; eight is comfortable. Fewer, better-produced cuts is good advice only up to about four.
4. Where to get imaging: four routes, honestly compared
All four of these produce airable results. They differ in money, turnaround and how much the result sounds like *you*. Prices checked September 2026 and quoted in USD; verify before you commit, because this market moves.

The route most working stations end up on is a blend: a hired or synthetic voice for the fixed elements that rarely change, a library subscription for beds and effects, and the owner’s own voice for anything with personality in it. There is no prize for purity here.
5. Build a starter imaging package from nothing
You do not need twenty cuts. You need five, and you can produce them in an afternoon. This is the minimum viable package — enough that a first-time listener can tell they’ve found a station:
- 1Write the positioning line first. One sentence, under ten words, that says what the station is: “Kestrel Radio — the ’90s, all day.” Everything else is a variation on this line, so getting it right first saves you re-recording everything later.
- 2Record the top-of-hour ID. Station name, the positioning line, nothing else. Dry voice over a bed, 5–8 seconds. This is the one cut you will air most, so give it the most takes.
- 3Produce two sweepers. Same voice, same bed family, different scripts — one energetic, one calmer, so you can match them to the songs either side. Leave a beat of bed running past the last word so they resolve into the music rather than stopping dead.
- 4Cut one bed. A 60–90 second instrumental loop with no melody strong enough to fight a voice. This goes under every spoken break you ever do, so pick something you won’t hate in month six.
- 5Leave one promo slot empty. Not a file — a *slot* in your clock, reserved for whatever you want to push this week. An empty slot you fill on Monday is worth more than a fifth sweeper.
- 6Loudness-match the set. Play each cut against three songs from your library and adjust until the imaging sits just above the music. Consistency across the five matters more than the absolute level.
Then grow it in this order, one item at a time: two more sweepers (to get you to four), a set of short station IDs for song-to-song transitions, a jingle once you’re sure the station name is final, then show-specific promos, then seasonal variants. Resist producing a jingle first. It’s the most fun and the most expensive, and a sung station name is exactly the thing you don’t want to have paid for the week before you rename the station.
6. The rights question almost no imaging guide covers
This section is short and it matters more than the rest of the article. The music under your voice is a separate licensing question from the music you air.
When you play a commercial song on your station, you are making a *performance* of it, and that is what a webcasting licence covers. When you place a commercial song underneath your station ID, edit it, loop it, and mix a voice over the top, you are doing something else entirely — you are combining it with your own content to make a new production. A performance licence does not cover that. It is the same reason a YouTube video needs its own music clearance even when the same song is legal to play on air.
The clean route is production music: libraries licence their catalogue explicitly for this, either per use (you buy the track once for a defined purpose) or by subscription (you may use anything in the catalogue while you’re subscribed). Read which model you’re on, because they behave very differently when you stop paying — a per-use licence you already bought typically stays yours; a subscription licence may not cover cuts still in rotation after you cancel.
Buy imaging rights in your own name
The same principle applies here as to your music licensing. A licence held in your own name — for a bed, a voice recording, or a jingle package — is an asset of your station: it travels with you if you change hosts, change platforms, or hand the station to someone else. Anything bundled by a supplier sits in *their* name and on *their* terms. Ask who the licensee is before you pay, and keep the receipts and the licence text somewhere you can find them in three years. The same reasoning behind holding your own music licence applies to every second of audio you air.
One more piece of paperwork worth getting right: if you hire a voice artist, the scope of their fee matters. A read licensed for “internet radio use” is not automatically licensed for use in a paid advert, a podcast, or a mobile app. Agree the scope in writing at booking time — it costs nothing then and is awkward later. 7. Getting imaging into rotation without touching it
Everything above is wasted if imaging only airs when you remember to drop it in. The operational payoff comes from treating imaging as a category the automation schedules for you, exactly like music.
The pattern is the same across every serious playout system, Nobex included: upload your cuts into their own categories — one for sweepers, one for IDs, one for promos, one for jingles — and then write the frequency from section 3 into your clock as rules rather than as a fixed playlist. Rule-based rotation lets you say “a sweeper in position four of every hour, a top-of-hour ID at :00, never two voiced elements consecutively” and then leave it alone. Three specifics worth setting deliberately:
- Exclude imaging from your music separation rules. Artist and title separation exists to stop the same song recurring. Applied to a five-second sweeper it produces strange scheduling, and applied wrongly it can starve the category.
- Put the top-of-hour ID immediately after the news, if you carry news on the hour — the handoff from a bulletin back to music is the moment listeners most need reminding whose station they’re on.
- Give shows their own imaging. A scheduled show that opens with its own promo and closes with a station ID reads as a programme rather than as a block of different songs.

8. One voice, one palette, refreshed by season
Imaging works by recognition, and recognition is built by sameness. That means two disciplines that feel counterintuitive when you’re excited about production.
One voice. Pick a voice for your imaging and keep it. Not necessarily yours — many stations deliberately use a different voice for imaging than for hosting, so the station has an identity separate from whoever is on air. What matters is that it doesn’t change. A station with three different imaging voices has no imaging voice.
One sonic palette. The same bed family, the same effect set, the same processing on every cut. If your sweepers share a three-note motif, that motif becomes your sonic logo and does more brand work than any script. Variety belongs in the words, not in the sound design.
Then refresh on a slow clock: a seasonal freshen — four times a year is plenty — where you re-record scripts, retire anything dated, and add a cut or two, keeping the voice and the palette. A full re-image, where the sound itself changes, belongs to a genuine change in the station: a format shift, a rename, a relaunch. Stations that re-image constantly sound restless, and they throw away the recognition they just spent three months building.
Record spare takes while the session is open
Whenever you or your voice artist are recording, cut the seasonal and holiday variants at the same time, plus two or three generic “more music” lines you don’t need yet. Booking a second session for one line is the expensive way to run a package, and takes recorded months apart never quite match.
9. Imaging questions, asked and answered
What is radio imaging?
Radio imaging is the produced audio between the songs that tells listeners which station they are hearing: station IDs, sweepers, liners, jingles, promos and the beds and effects underneath them. It is what turns a playlist into a station, and it is usually the biggest audible difference between a hobby stream and a professional one.
What is the difference between a sweeper and a jingle?
A sweeper is spoken over a music bed with an effect, typically 4–10 seconds, and its job is to cover the transition from one song into the next. A jingle is sung — your station name set to a melody, usually 3–15 seconds. Do internet radio stations need a legal ID?
